| The settlement of the urban type – Krasnij, situated at a
distance of 45 km to the South-West of Smolensk. The official date of its foundation is
the year 1165. Beeing situated on the Old Smolensk road, Krasnij was the western ou tpost
of Smolensk for a long time. It gained its greatest popularity during the Civil war of
1812. Here Russian troops under the command of general D.P. Neverovskji offered stout
resistance to French troops, not letting the break-through to the rear of the first and
the second Russian armies. Modern Krasnij has remained the appearance of the second half
of the XIX – the beginning of the XX century; the monuments of town building of the
epoch of Classicism give the unique colour to these places.
The annual Russian competitions in motocross take place in Krasnij.
